Zorbas Bakery, Ayia Napa & Protaras — The Morning Pastry Guide (2026)

Before the beach bars, the boat trips, the pool parties: there is Zorbas. Cyprus's most beloved bakery chain has been feeding the island since 1946, and its branches in Ayia Napa and Protaras are among the best budget meals you'll have on holiday — provided you arrive before 10am, when the freshest pastries are still warm.
This is not a brunch café with flower walls and €16 eggs Benedict. It is a proper Cypriot bakery: functional, fast, honest, and genuinely excellent at what it does.

Open Itinerary BuilderZorbas started as a single bakery in Nicosia and expanded across Cyprus over decades. Every branch bakes fresh daily — the smell of tiropita coming out of the oven is a reliable alarm clock for anyone staying near the Ayia Napa town centre. The chain is where locals eat breakfast, where Cypriot grandmothers pick up their morning koulouri, and where sensible visitors head before the resort wakes up.
There is nothing tourist-trap about it. The prices are the same whether you are Cypriot or on your first day of a British package holiday.
Tiropita — the essential order. Flaky filo pastry filled with a mixture of cheeses (typically feta and halloumi, though recipes vary slightly by branch). Eaten warm, ideally within five minutes of coming out of the oven. The crust shatters; the filling is salty and dense. €1.50–2.
Koupes — a specifically Cypriot product that you will not find elsewhere: bulgur wheat croquettes filled with spiced minced meat, shaped like a rugby ball, and deep-fried to order. The outer shell is crisp; the filling is aromatic with cinnamon and allspice. Deeply satisfying at 8am after a night out. €1.50 each.
Spanakopita — spinach and feta in filo, the more familiar relative of tiropita. Slightly lighter, worth ordering if you want something that feels more like food and less like pure cheese. €1.50.
Sesame koulouri — ring-shaped bread coated in sesame seeds, similar to a Turkish simit. Tear off a piece and eat it plain or dip it in the honey they keep on the counter. €0.80.
Loukoumades — fried honey doughnuts with a crisp exterior and pillowy interior. Not always available at every branch but worth asking. €3 for a portion.
Coffee — freddo espresso is the correct order: strong Greek espresso poured over ice and frothed briefly. Wakes you up effectively. The freddo cappuccino adds a milk foam layer. Both are €2–2.50, significantly cheaper than the strip cafés nearby.
The Ayia Napa branch sits in the town centre, a short walk from the main square. It opens at 7am and the morning rush hits around 8–9am as hotel guests walk in before beach days start. The lines are manageable and move quickly — Zorbas operates efficiently by design.
Best time: 7–9am for freshest pastries. By 10am the first batch of anything is gone.
Location: Ayia Napa town centre. Easy to find on Google Maps.
The Protaras branch serves the same menu — same prices, same quality, same opening hours. It is less busy than the Ayia Napa branch and a better option if you are staying on the Protaras or Paralimni side. Useful as an early stop before Fig Tree Bay or a Cape Greco morning walk.
Best combination: Pick up tiropita and koupes at Zorbas, then drive to the Cape Greco viewpoint before the crowds arrive. You have breakfast with arguably the best view on the island.
A full Zorbas breakfast — two pastries, a freddo espresso — costs €4.50–5.50. That is less than a single cocktail at any beach bar on the strip, and it is a better meal than most hotel buffets charging €15. This is one of the genuinely good value moments in Ayia Napa, where budget options are otherwise thin on the ground.
For groups arriving early before a boat trip or airport transfer, Zorbas is the obvious answer to "where do we eat?" It is fast, good, and leaves you with enough money to pay for the boat.
