Best Beaches for Families

Makronissos Beach

Fig Tree Bay, Protaras

Fig Tree Bay is consistently ranked one of Europe's best beaches and earns it. The water is flat calm, extraordinarily clear, and very shallow — excellent for children who want to see the sandy bottom and small fish without needing to swim far out. It's 15 minutes from Ayia Napa by car or taxi (€15–20). Worth the trip for at least one day.

Konnos Bay

A smaller, sheltered cove 10 minutes east of Ayia Napa (just before Cape Greco). The water is clear, the entry is gentle, and it's less crowded than Nissi Beach. Good for a half-day with younger children — bring snorkels, the shallow reef sections have marine life.

What to avoid for families: Nissi Beach main area in peak season

Nissi Beach is iconic but runs loud music, serves alcohol prominently, and gets very crowded in July–August. The water itself is fine — the environment less so for families with young children. Go early morning (before 9am) if you want to experience it without the crowd.

Best Activities for Families

WaterWorld Waterpark (Full Day)

WaterWorld is Europe's largest themed waterpark and one of the genuinely great family days out in Cyprus. The Ancient Greek theme adds entertainment value for older kids, the children's aqua play area is excellent for under-6s, and the mix of high-intensity slides (teens and adults) and relaxed river ride (everyone) means different family members don't have to compromise.

Budget: €35–55 per child, €48–55 per adult. A family of four will spend €150–200+ on entry alone — add food, the Fast Pass in peak season, and extras.

Tip: Book tickets online in advance to save 10–15% and avoid the gate queue. The WaterWorld website sells direct.

MUSAN — The Underwater Sculpture Museum

For older children (8+) who can snorkel, MUSAN is one of the most memorable experiences available anywhere near Ayia Napa. 93 sculptures sit on the seabed in 8–10 metres of water — a glass-bottom boat tour is available for non-swimmers and younger children.

It's the kind of thing children remember long after they've forgotten the beach days.

Cape Greco National Park

Cape Greco has no entry fee, no crowds compared to the beaches, excellent coastal paths, and sea caves accessible by short walk or swimming. For active families with children old enough to manage 30–60 minutes of walking on uneven terrain, it's a genuinely excellent half-day.

The sea caves are the main draw — but the cliff-top paths and the Love Bridge are also worth including.

Yellow Submarine at Ayia Napa Harbour

For younger children or anyone who wants to see the sea without getting in it, the Yellow Submarine is a purpose-built semi-submersible that runs regular trips from Ayia Napa harbour around the coastal sea caves and marine areas. Large underwater windows let you see the sea floor without getting wet.

Book at the harbour or through your hotel.

Parko Paliatso Luna Park

Located near the town centre, Parko Paliatso is a traditional seaside funfair — rides ranging from a large Ferris wheel (good views over the coast) to standard fairground attractions. Entry is free; pay per ride or buy an all-inclusive band. Best visited in the evening when it's lit up and cooler. Good for children 5–14; adults can enjoy the atmosphere if not the rides.

Boat Trips

A morning snorkelling and swim cruise around the Cape Greco coastline is suitable for most children over 6 who are comfortable in the water. Operators run 3–4 hour trips that include a swim stop in clear water, equipment provided. The boats used for family trips are typically smaller glass-bottom or catamaran-style vessels rather than the party boats. Book at the Ayia Napa harbour activity desks or through your hotel.

Where to Stay as a Family

Best areas

Makronissos / Sandy Bay area: Quieter than the main strip, closer to Makronissos Beach, family hotels dominant. Good for early bedtimes and a slower pace.

Nissi Beach area: More animation and facilities, slightly better beach access, slightly louder at night. Works for families with older children who can handle more energy in the environment.

Avoid: Hotels on or immediately adjacent to the main party strip (Nissi Avenue near The Square). The noise from clubs extends to 4–5am in peak season.

Family hotel considerations

• Pool: Essential in peak season. A children's pool section is a significant bonus.
• All-inclusive vs self-catering: All-inclusive simplifies meals for younger children significantly; self-catering gives better value and flexibility for older ones.
• Distance from the beach: Most Ayia Napa family hotels are within 500m of a beach. Check the specific beach it accesses — not all are equal.

Day Trip for Families: Fig Tree Bay + MUSAN

A strong single-day combination: morning at Fig Tree Bay (swimming, shallow water, clear conditions), lunch at a Protaras restaurant (quieter, better food than the strip), then an afternoon MUSAN glass-bottom boat trip back via Ayia Napa harbour.

Works well for children 5+ and adults who want variety in a single day.

What Families Can Skip

The main nightlife strip: No reason to go near it during the day with younger children. It's quiet until 11pm and the area isn't designed for kids.

Foam parties and paint parties: These exist and are marketed broadly — they're adult events, not family ones, despite some misleading marketing.

The Troodos mountains day trip: A long day for generally mediocre payoff if you're with children. Save it for a dedicated Cyprus trip without the resort base.

Practical Notes for Families

Transport: A hire car makes family logistics significantly easier — WaterWorld, Cape Greco, Protaras, and Fig Tree Bay all reward the flexibility of your own vehicle. Car hire at Larnaca Airport should be booked 3–4 weeks ahead in peak season.

Sun: Cyprus sun is intense from May through September. Shade between 11am and 3pm is important for young children. SPF 50, hats, and rash vests for water play are the practical standards.

Eating with children: The taverna culture in Cyprus is genuinely family-friendly — children are welcome at any hour, portions are large, and staff are patient. Avoid the tourist-trap restaurants on the main strip in favour of the side streets or heading to Protaras.

Medical: The nearest hospital is in Larnaca (40–45 minutes). Ayia Napa has a medical centre and several pharmacies for non-emergency situations. Travel insurance with medical coverage is standard and recommended.
