Ayia Napa has one of Cyprusβs largest concentrations of beach water sports, and Nissi Beach usually offers the widest choice in one location. From the main beach area, you can book activities ranging from paddleboard hire to jet skiing without travelling to another bay.
Prices are often similar across the main beaches, but they vary by operator, session length and season. The better operators explain the safety rules, provide correctly fitted buoyancy aids and check that the equipment suits your age and ability. Avoid deals that do not clearly state the total ride time, price and number of participants.

Open Itinerary BuilderFor the broadest choice, start at Nissi Beach. For a less crowded launch area and better conditions for relaxed paddling, try Makronissos Beach. Availability depends on weather, demand and the operatorβs seasonal schedule, so check locally before making a special journey.
You can usually find jet skis at Nissi Beach, Makronissos Beach and Landa Beach, with Nissi generally offering the largest fleet and most regular availability. Riders normally remain within a designated offshore area under staff supervision rather than travelling freely along the coast.
No previous experience is normally required. Before departure, staff should explain throttle control, steering, the permitted riding area and what to do if you fall off. Most machines can carry two people, but minimum driver ages, passenger rules and combined weight limits vary. Bring photo identification and confirm whether the quoted price covers one machine or one person.
Jet skiing suits visitors who want speed but have limited time. Fifteen minutes can feel brief, although it is usually enough for a first attempt. A 30-minute session makes more sense if the sea is calm and you already feel confident controlling the machine.
Tip: Reserve your jet ski during the morning in July and August. Afternoon availability can become limited, particularly on weekends and public holidays.
Parasailing is commonly available from Nissi Beach and may also operate from Makronissos Beach, depending on the operator and weather. A winch boat gradually lifts you from its rear platform and returns you to the boat after the flight, giving you elevated views across the bay and coastline.
One, two or sometimes three people may fly together, depending on wind, equipment limits and combined weight. You wear a life jacket and remain attached to a harness throughout the flight. Strong swimming ability is not normally required because take-off and landing take place on the boat, although procedures can vary.
Parasailing is a premium activity, but the flight provides a perspective that you cannot get from the beach. It feels calm rather than extreme in suitable weather. Flights may be postponed or cancelled if the wind changes, so treat departure times as provisional and ask about the cancellation policy before paying.
Tip: Choose a morning flight when the forecast is settled. Winds and boat traffic often increase later in the day, while haze can reduce long-distance visibility.
Banana boats, inflatable sofas and ring rides are normally available at Nissi Beach, Makronissos Beach and Landa Beach during the main season. Departures are usually arranged on demand once enough riders have booked.
Banana boats are shared rides that often carry six or more people. Ring and sofa rides sit lower on the water and can involve sharper turns and more bouncing. Expect to get wet, but riders should not be deliberately thrown off without agreement. Ask about minimum ages, seating arrangements and the intended pace before boarding.
Banana boats offer reasonable value when several friends want to ride together. Ring rides are a better choice if you want faster turns, but the repeated jolting may not suit anyone with back, neck or shoulder problems.
Tip: Tell both the booking staff and driver if you want a gentle ride. Do not assume that a family booking will automatically be operated at a slower pace.
Flyboarding has appeared at Nissi Beach, with occasional availability elsewhere, but it is not as consistently offered as jet skiing or parasailing. Equipment, staffing and operating locations can change between seasons, so confirm current availability directly before travelling. A hose connected to a personal watercraft directs water through the board, lifting the rider above the sea.
Promotional videos make flyboarding look simple, but beginners usually spend much of the first session learning to stand upright and control small movements. Repeated falls are normal. A patient instructor may help you achieve a short, controlled hover, but advanced turns and dives require considerably more practice.
Flyboarding can be worth the cost if it is an activity you specifically want to try. Jet skiing provides more immediate action for less effort, while flyboarding rewards balance, persistence and physical control. Ask how much of the advertised session is actual water time rather than briefing and equipment fitting.
Tip: Wear secure swimwear and remove jewellery, watches and loose accessories. Avoid booking immediately after a large meal because you may repeatedly fall into the water and climb back into position.
Wakeboarding is available through motorboat tow sessions at Nissi Beach and may be offered less consistently at Makronissos Beach. It requires more technique than an inflatable ride but becomes more rewarding as your starts and balance improve.
Beginners start in deep water with their knees bent, holding the tow handle while the boat accelerates gradually. Several failed starts are normal, so confirm whether the session time includes instruction and retrieval after falls. Experience with snowboarding may help with the sideways stance, but wakeboarding also requires grip strength and controlled weight distribution.
Wakeboarding offers better progression than flyboarding if you want to learn a repeatable board sport. Book during the morning, when wind and traffic from excursion boats are less likely to create choppy conditions.
For paddleboards and kayaks, try Makronissos Beach, Nissi Beach or Landa Beach. Makronissos is often the better choice for relaxed paddling because its sandy bays are usually less congested than Nissiβs main activity area.
Stand-up paddleboarding is manageable when the water is flat, although offshore wind can make the return journey difficult. Sit-on-top kayaks are generally easier for beginners and are often available as single or double craft. Staff should explain the permitted area and any local route restrictions before you leave.
Stay clear of marked swimming zones, boat channels and powered water sports areas. Do not paddle towards excursion boats or around headlands without checking the wind, distance and operatorβs boundaries.
Tip: Go between 8am and 10am, when conditions are often cooler and calmer. Wear sunscreen, take water and keep a waterproof phone pouch attached to your body rather than loose on the board.
Masks, snorkels and fins may be available from beach water sports kiosks, dive centres and nearby shops, although rental is not guaranteed at every beach. Buying an inexpensive mask can be more practical if you plan to snorkel several times.
Do not expect a coral reef. The main attractions are clear water, rocky seabeds, seagrass patches and small Mediterranean fish. Nissi Beach is suitable for swimming, but its busy, predominantly sandy shallows offer less to see underwater.
Konnos Bay, between Ayia Napa and Protaras, has rocky sides and a sheltered beach entry, although it becomes busy in summer. Ammos Kambouri Beach offers easier access to rocky underwater terrain than the exposed Cape Greco Sea Caves. Glyki Nero Beach, east of Ayia Napa harbour and below the Sculpture Park area, is convenient for visitors staying near the town.
The Cape Greco Sea Caves are better viewed from a boat or on an organised excursion. Cliff access, waves, currents and passing craft can make independent entry unsafe, particularly when the sea is not completely calm.
Tip: Never snorkel in jet ski areas, marked boat channels or close to excursion vessels. Use a beach entry, remain within designated swimming water and consider a brightly coloured snorkel float.
For an introductory scuba dive, use an established Ayia Napa or Protaras dive centre that lists recognised training credentials, properly maintained equipment and current insurance. Sessions normally begin with a medical questionnaire and shallow-water skills before a closely supervised sea dive.
Certification is not required for a supervised introductory dive. You will learn breathing, pressure equalisation, mask clearing, regulator recovery and basic hand signals. Maximum depth depends on the programme, age and instructor, but beginner experiences are generally limited to shallow water and no more than about 12 metres.
An introductory dive costs more than a short motorised ride, but the price normally includes instruction, equipment and direct supervision. Ask whether transport, photographs and equipment are included.
Do not schedule diving immediately before a flight. Follow the dive centreβs no-fly guidance, which is commonly at least 12 hours after one introductory dive and longer after multiple dives. Leave a full day between diving and flying if your itinerary allows.
Nissi Beach has the broadest concentration of water sports in Ayia Napa. Depending on the season and conditions, you may find jet skis, parasailing, inflatable rides, paddleboards and wakeboarding, plus restaurants, toilets, showers and bus connections from the town centre.
Makronissos Beach is the main alternative. It has a smaller selection but usually provides more space for kayaks and paddleboards. Landa Beach, between Nissi and Makronissos, can be useful when Nissi is crowded, although its range of motorised activities is more limited.
Tip: If paddling is your priority, arrive at Makronissos by about 9:30am. Use Nissi for activities that are unavailable there, but confirm the dayβs programme before travelling between beaches.
Walk-up booking is usually straightforward in May, June, September and October, although some activities operate less frequently outside peak season. In July and August, reserve popular activities during the morning, especially if you want a specific time for jet skiing, parasailing or wakeboarding. Advance booking is sensible if you have only one beach day, but weather can still delay or cancel the session.
For low-cost time on the water, paddleboarding or kayaking usually provides the best value. An introductory scuba dive costs more but includes instruction and a longer experience. Jet skiing is the straightforward choice for speed, while parasailing is primarily about the elevated coastal view.
Inflatable rides offer good group entertainment but limited value if sold as long packages containing several similar rides. Choose flyboarding only if you want a demanding balance challenge and have confirmed that it is operating during your visit.
Tip: Book one high-energy activity during the morning, then choose a kayak, snorkel or paddleboard session later instead of paying for several short motorised rides.
