MUSAN (Museum of Underwater Sculpture Ayia Napa) is one of the most genuinely unusual attractions in the Mediterranean — a permanent museum installed on the seabed about 1km off the Ayia Napa coast, created by British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor. It consists of 93 sculptures sitting in approximately 8–10 metres of water, designed to encourage coral growth and marine life while functioning as an accessible art installation.
The sculptures were positioned in 2021 and have been accumulating marine growth since. By 2026 many are substantially colonised — coral fingers, sea anemones, and small fish populations have established in and around the figures, making the site genuinely interesting to snorkellers and divers rather than just art tourists.

A guided snorkelling tour is the most popular way to see MUSAN and genuinely delivers for non-divers. You're taken out on a small boat, given mask, fins, and snorkel if needed, and guided over the sculpture field.
At 8–10 metres depth, you can free-dive down for a closer look with moderate swimming ability, or view the outlines from the surface. The water clarity typically allows you to make out the larger sculptures without going below the surface at all on a calm day.

Book a MUSAN snorkelling tour at the Ayia Napa harbour activity desks or through your hotel. Tours include boat, guide, and all equipment — book at least a day ahead in peak season as slots fill quickly.
Several operators run glass-bottom boat tours that pass over the MUSAN site as part of a broader coastal route. The glass panel in the hull allows you to see the sculptures without getting in the water at all.
Best for: Families with young children, non-swimmers, anyone who wants to combine MUSAN with a general coastal cruise.
The view through glass is less impressive than snorkelling directly above, but for families or anyone who prefers to stay dry, it's a legitimate option and often included in the standard Ayia Napa boat tour circuit. Glass-bottom boat tours depart regularly from Ayia Napa harbour — check the activity boards or ask your hotel for current operators.
At 8–10 metres, MUSAN is within easy range for Open Water divers or beginner divers on a supervised intro dive. Being on the seabed among the sculptures — rather than looking down at them — is a different experience entirely.
Several Ayia Napa dive centres offer dedicated MUSAN dives as part of their trip schedule. If you're not certified, many include MUSAN on introductory "discover scuba" sessions where an instructor accompanies you through the whole dive.

Taylor's MUSAN work is consistent with his other underwater projects (Cancun, Grenada, Lanzarote) — life-sized human figures in naturalistic poses, cast in pH-neutral marine concrete that actively encourages coral growth. The Ayia Napa installation includes figures arranged in circular and grid formations, some in motion, some static.
By 2026, four years of marine growth has added texture and colour to the concrete — yellow coral patches, feathery tube worms, small bream and wrasse using the structures as shelter. The aesthetic effect underwater is somewhere between sculpture park and artificial reef.
Best months for visibility: May–October, with July–August typically offering the clearest conditions. After winter storms (November–March), some sediment disturbance can reduce visibility temporarily.
Best time of day: Morning — before afternoon wind picks up and creates surface chop.
Sea conditions: If the sea is rough, snorkelling over MUSAN becomes difficult and some operators will cancel. Book with free cancellation so you can rebook if conditions aren't right.
Can I snorkel to MUSAN independently? The site is approximately 1km offshore — swimable in calm conditions for strong open-water swimmers, but a significant distance with equipment. Most visitors sensibly take a tour boat, which gets you directly above the site.
Photography: An underwater camera or waterproof phone case is worth having. GoPro footage from MUSAN is genuinely good. Some operators offer rental.
Marine park rules: MUSAN is in a protected marine area. Do not touch the sculptures — the coral growth is fragile, and direct contact damages it. Do not anchor on the site.
Children: Most snorkel tours have a minimum age of 8–10. Glass-bottom boat tours typically have no minimum age.
