Ayia Napa Day Trips — Beaches & Excursions Worth Doing (2026)

Cape Greco is the headland at the southeastern tip of Cyprus, 8–10km east of Ayia Napa centre. It is a protected national park, which means no development, no beach clubs, and no strip energy — just limestone cliff paths, sea caves, and water so clear that you can see individual rocks on the seabed from the surface.

The sea caves are the headline attraction: wave-carved chambers at the waterline, accessible by swimming in from the water or scrambling from the cliff paths. Best in the morning when the eastern light comes directly into the cave mouths.

The Love Bridge is a natural rock arch on the eastern side of the cape — a short scramble from the main path, with views back toward Konnos Bay that are worth the detour. Fewer tourists know where it is than the sea caves.

The coastal walk from Ayia Napa Harbour to Cape Greco takes 1.5–2 hours one way along the cliff path. It passes above the MUSAN underwater sculpture site — look down into the clear water and you can see the sculptures from above. Reward yourself with a taxi back (€10–15) rather than walking both ways.

Getting there: Quad bike hire from Makarios Avenue or the strip (~€25–35 half-day) is the most popular option — 15 minutes from central Ayia Napa. Taxi is ~€10–15 each way. No public bus serves Cape Greco directly. Walk the coastal path if you have time and reasonable fitness.

Admission: Free. The national park has no entry fee.

You almost certainly already know Nissi Beach is on the list. What most first-timers miss is the timing: Nissi Beach is spectacular before 10am and genuinely packed by 11am in peak season. Go early.

The beach is 3km west of the strip along Nissi Avenue — €5–7 by taxi, €1.50 by bus (Route 101, approximately every 30 minutes in peak season — verify current timetables at the stop).

The water is the colour people assume Mediterranean water always is. It is shallow, clear, and sandy — no rocks at the shoreline. The small rocky islet 50 metres offshore (Nissi, meaning "island") is worth wading across to at least once. The snorkelling around the eastern rocks is better than anything in the main organised beach area.

Konnos Bay is a small, sheltered cove just before Cape Greco, about 10km east of the strip. The water is calm, enclosed, and genuinely clear — snorkelling around the rocky headlands is excellent, with wrasse, sea urchins, and occasional octopus. The beach is smaller than Nissi and has no beach club scene — just a modest beach bar and organised sunbeds in a very manageable space.

Getting there: Taxi from the strip (€12–18 each way — verify current rates with the driver). No bus service. Worth combining with a Cape Greco visit on the same day.

Protaras is 12–15km north of Ayia Napa along the coast — 15–18 minutes by car, about 30 minutes by bus (Route 101, €1.50 each way, runs regularly in peak season). The town itself is calmer, more family-oriented, and a noticeable change of pace from the strip energy.

Fig Tree Bay — Protaras's flagship beach — consistently appears in European "best beach" rankings. The sand is pale and fine, the water is shallow and flat calm in the enclosed bay, and a small rocky islet 200–300 metres offshore (Ayia Triada, with a small white chapel on top) is reachable by boat ferry for €3–5 return.

Worth a full afternoon. Combine with lunch at one of the Protaras strip restaurants (noticeably better value and more variety than eating on the beach itself).

WaterWorld Waterpark, 3km west of the strip on the road toward Larnaca, is one of the better waterparks in Europe — genuinely excellent rather than adequate. The Ancient Greek mythology theme adds entertainment value, the slide variety is wide (from calm river rides to near-vertical drops), and the children's aqua play area for younger visitors is well-designed.

A full day here with your group is one of the highest-energy and most straightforwardly enjoyable things you can do in Ayia Napa in daylight.

Admission: Adult tickets €48–55, child €35–45 at the gate — prices vary by season. Book online in advance to save 10–15% and skip the ticket queue. Verify current pricing before visiting.

Practical: Arrive at opening time (10am). The most popular slides develop long queues by noon. Fast Pass is available and worth considering in July–August. Food inside the park is expensive — budget €15–20 per person for meals and snacks inside.

Half-day and full-day boat trips depart from Ayia Napa Harbour (10 minutes south of the main square on foot) and visit the sea caves, the Blue Lagoon near Cape Greco, and remote coves not accessible by road. This is the best way to experience the Cape Greco coastline if you don't want to walk.

Cost: Sea cave snorkelling tour ~€25–35 per person (half-day). Full boat party format ~€55–65 per person.

Book in advance in July–August — popular departure slots sell out. The harbour is a 10-minute walk south of the main square.

Famagusta is 40 minutes north of Ayia Napa — a completely different Cyprus from the resort strip. A perfectly preserved medieval walled city (the Venetian walls are some of the best in the eastern Mediterranean), a Gothic cathedral turned mosque (Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque — extraordinary), and the partially reopened Varosha ghost town, frozen since 1974.

This is the trip that gives the week a different dimension. Anyone with an interest in history or architecture will find it extraordinary. Budget a half-day.

Getting there: Guided day tour (€45–70, handles the border crossing logistics) or private taxi (~€50–70 for the vehicle return). Note Famagusta is in the Turkish-administered north — a passport check is required at the crossing point, which is routine and takes 5–15 minutes.

The tourist train around the strip — harmless but doesn't go anywhere interesting.

Troodos Mountains day trip from Ayia Napa — a 2-hour drive each way for scenery that is better experienced on a dedicated Cyprus trip. The day is wasted on a party holiday.
